Starfish Facts on Reproduction
When it comes to starfish facts on reproduction, things can get a little bit interesting considering the fact that some species can regenerate and grow just from an arm. But the regeneration of one starfish coming from a single arm is under the asexual form of reproduction and only a few species will be able to do that. Regeneration usually requires majority of the central disc to be intact for most of the other species.
In terms of sexual reproduction, starfishes are just like most other animals where a male and a female will need to spawn in order to create new offspring. The male and the female starfishes actually look very similar to each other when it comes to the external physical characteristics. But when they spawn, their internal gonads will be revealed and their sex can be identified. Some species also have both male and female sex organs which means they can reproduce on their own.
Majority of the time, the males release their sperm while the females release their eggs in the sea. Fertilization usually occurs externally but some species have been found to fertilize within their bodies. When the eggs are fertilized, they either stick to rocks or float in the sea until they hatch to become larvae.
Drying a Starfish
Starfish can be dried by first mixing equal portions baking soda and table salt. Apply a thin layer of this mixture to the inside bottom of a shallow, small cardboard box. Then put that box aside for later use. In a casserole dish, combine one part “for home use” bleach and three parts water together. You will be needing enough of this solution for submerging the starfish completely. Place the starfish in your bleach solution then let it soak for More... Anatomy of the Starfish Facts
A lot of starfish facts talk about the anatomy of this sea creature. The shape of the common starfish which is what people perceive as a star is already interesting as it is. But if you look into the structure both internal and external parts of the starfish, you will really be fascinated by this animal. Just like humans, the starfish has different skin layers such as the epidermis and the dermis. But they also have an epithelium layer where More... Structure of Body
Starfish is not really fish because fish is composed of backbones, fins and gills. Starfish is an echinoderm, which is an invertebrate that has a proportional radial body. Instead of scales, starfish species are mostly equipped with a leathery, rigid skin, which protects them against the attack of predators like birds and fishes. Calcium carbonate makes up the skin of all starfishes. Most of the starfish species are equipped with five arms, which extend out of a central point; nonetheless, More... Starfish Facts on its Ancient History
When it comes to researching about starfish facts on their history, it is actually a very difficult process because starfishes are echinoderms and their species hardly leave any trace in their fossils aside from their external ossicles and spines. This makes it extra difficult for the researchers to spot and identify fossils that are strictly from the starfishes. But according to research findings, starfish fossils can be traced back to Ordovician which is roughly about 450 million years ago. There More... Starfish Facts
Starfish, also popularly recognized equally as sea stars, common name for 5 orders and about 1500 living species of marine invertebrate characterized by radially arranged arms having locomotory tube feet. Actually, starfish cannot be considered as fish in spite of the name provided to these sea animals. Some known starfish facts are that they belong to the group called echinoderms. They can be found in great numbers in the depths of the ocean and as well as in shallow waters. More... Starfish Facts on its Importance in Nature
A lot of people see starfishes as cute animals by the seashore that you can pick up and take pictures of. But there is actually more to these creatures than just their appearances and colors. Not a lot of people understand starfish facts especially about their contribution to nature. Just like any other animal in the marine kingdom, they contribute a lot in Eco diversity and in keeping the food chain running. Scientists and biologists actually called starfishes as keystone More... Researching about Starfish Facts
There will be no starfish facts that people know today if not for the researches and studies done by scientists, zoologists, and biologists. From the time that starfish species were first discovered and studied by humans until today, a wider range of information are already gathered pertaining to these creatures. Researching starfishes is not an easy thing to do since there are thousands of species that are still living. In order to understand the evolution of this creature, researchers would More... |
